Unit ND3: Controlling Workplace Safety Issues (UK)
Unit ND3 covers the “do” skills needed to control common physical safety hazards in the workplace. It addresses a broad spectrum of safety issues – from general workplace safety (like housekeeping and electrical safety) to high-risk activities (such as work at height, machinery operation, and construction work). This module equips learners with the technical knowledge to identify dangers and implement controls to prevent accidents and injuries across various industries. Emphasis is on practical risk control strategies in line with UK regulations (e.g. PUWER, LOLER, Fire Safety Order, CDM Regulations). Online learning components include virtual walk-throughs of workplaces (to spot hazards), interactive risk assessment exercises, and case studies of real accidents.
Unit ND2: Controlling Workplace Health Issues (UK)
Unit ND2 focuses on what a health and safety professional must “do” to control common workplace health and wellbeing hazards. This section covers occupational health risks and their management across various industries, from factories and construction sites to offices and healthcare settings. Learners study the identification, evaluation, and control of hazards that affect workers’ health (short-term and long-term). Topics range from hazardous substances and agents (chemical, biological, physical) to psychosocial issues like stress and violence. Emphasis is placed on applying principles of occupational hygiene, health surveillance, and wellness programs to maintain a healthy workforce. The module is delivered via online lessons and practical case studies (including multimedia and virtual simulations of workplace health scenarios). Learners will practice performing health risk assessments and recommending controls in line with UK legislation and best practice.
Unit ND4: Application of Health and Safety Management in the Workplace (Practical Assignment)
Unit ND4 is a capstone module where learners put into practice all the knowledge and skills gained in ND1–ND3. In this practical assignment, candidates must apply health and safety theory to a real or simulated workplace situation. The aim is to demonstrate the ability to assess an organization’s H&S performance holistically and drive improvements. Learners will typically select a workplace (often their own company or a realistic case study) and conduct a detailed review covering H&S management systems and hazard controls. This project integrates both “know” and “do” aspects – requiring analysis of management arrangements (from ND1) and evaluation of specific health and safety risks (from ND2 and ND3). The outcome is a comprehensive written report with actionable recommendations to improve health and safety.
Unit ND1: Workplace Health and Safety Principles (UK)
Unit ND1 covers the core knowledge a health and safety professional needs to “know”. This module examines the foundational drivers and frameworks for effective H&S management in the UK. It includes the moral, legal and financial imperatives for health and safety, the UK regulatory system, and how to design and implement robust safety management systems. Learners will explore organizational factors like leadership and culture, risk management methodologies, and human factors that influence workplace safety. Emphasis is placed on understanding legislation and standards, and developing strategies to improve health and safety performance across any industry. Training is delivered through online lectures, discussions, and scenario exercises. (Assessment for ND1 is typically via a written assignment encompassing simulated scenarios and a workplace-based research project.)
